  1. Beebe, Charles 1877-1962. US naturalist,
  2. explorer, and writer. His interest in
  3. deep-sea exploration led to a collaboration
  4. with the engineer Otis Barton and the
  5. development of a spherical diving vessel, the
  6. bathysphere. On 24 August 1934 the two men
  7. made a record-breaking dive to 923 m/3028 ft.
  8. Beebe's expeditions are described in a series
  9. of memoirs.
